While
I was in Florida for the ISPA Conference
and Expo, I took the opportunity to visit a couple of Orlando area spas. I
made a reservation - the last one of the day - at the Mandara Spa at Loews Portofino
Bay Hotel at Universal Orlando®. After a long day of education
courses, interviews and walking the expo floor, I was looking forward to completely
relaxing in the spa. I took a taxi to the Portofino Bay Hotel and got there with
time to spare. After roaming around the hotel for 10 minutes, I found the spa
by the Piazza Ponte tucked between the Beach and Villa pools.
I
checked in at the reception desk and was escorted to the changing room.
I
changed into the robe and sandals found in my locker and waited in the lounge.
There
I had time to warm up in the sauna (the steam room was out of order) and enjoy
a glass of lemon water before Emile, my esthetician, came for me.
She
escorted me to an inviting treatment room. The light was softly diffused through
a beautiful cloth draped across the ceiling, which gave a warm glow. I have to
admit that once I was on the treatment table, I immediately fell into "the
zone" - that half awake / half asleep state of deep relaxation - and don't
remember many of the details of the facial. I do remember a thick, cool mask and
a wonderful hand and arm massage. When the facial was over, I was left with very
soft, moist skin.
Celeste then escorted me to another treatment room for
my final treatment, a Balinese Massage. This absolutely fabulous massage used
a combination of stretching, acupressure and Swedish massage techniques. Thankfully,
Celeste gave extra attention to my tired legs and sore feet. I felt wonderful
when it was over.
I was delighted to find Elemis products at the spa
and purchased a men's gift set for my son who has been asking for one since the
last time I gave on to him a number of years ago. He was very happy to open it
on Christmas morning!
The spa has a total of fourteen treatment rooms, a
co-ed lounge and co-ed whirlpool (which I didn't have a chance to see or experience),
separate men’s and women’s sauna and steam rooms, a fitness center with
individual TV monitors, and a hair and nail salon.

• Appointments
- To make an appointment you may call the spa directly from The Hard Rock Hotel,
Royal Pacific Hotel or Portofino Bay Hotel by dialing 31244. If you are calling
from outside the hotel complex dial, 407-503-1244 or for more information go online
at www.mandaraspa.com. Most major credit cards are accepted which is required
to hold your reservation. It is suggested that you make appointments in advance.
However, the spa will always do its best to accommodate your requests.
• In
Suite Treatments If you are staying at the Portofino
Bay Hotel, the spa can come to you with a selection of massage rituals. All In-Suite
massages are gender to gender. • Cancellation
- If you need to cancel a reservation or reschedule one, the spa requires 4 hours
notice for individual appointments and packages. Appointments canceled in less
than the required time will be billed 100% of published tariff of each service.
• Check-In
- Please arrive 30 minutes ahead of your scheduled reservation. This allows time
for a leisurely check-in, a change of clothes, and a few moments to relax and
enjoy the facilities. To keep the serenity of the spa, please turn off your cellular
phone upon arrival. Please present all Gift Certificates and promotional coupons
at check-in. • Refunds
- You can exchange unopened products within 30 days of purchase if you have a
receipt. Opened products cannot be exchanged. •Gratuity
and Service Charges - An additional 18% service charge
will be added. Prices and services are subject to change without notice. •Fitness
Center - Children14-16 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Children under 13 years of age are not permitted in the Fitness Center. •Face
and Body Treatments - The minimum age required to receive
a facial, body treatment or massage is 16. •Co-Ed
