Facilities: Ojo Caliente is the only hot springs in the world with a
remarkable combination of four different types of mineral water: lithium, iron,
soda and arsenic. Ten pools are filled with different types and combinations of
waters with temperatures ranging from 80-109 degrees. The Lithia Spring
is located at the heart of the springs. the historic pump has been dispensing
this unique water since the nineteenth century. Lithium is believed to relieve
depression and aid digestion. The Iron Spring's warm, iron-rich water bubbles
up from the natural pebble floor, providing hot spots to discover in this mystical
outdoor cliffside pool. A Native American legend tells that the giant rock in
the iron pool guards the place where the ancient people of the mesa once received
food and water during times of famine. Iron is considered to be beneficial to
the blood and immune system. Water from The Soda Spring is said to have
been used to relieve digestive problems. The rock walls in the enclosed Soda "steam"
pool create a soft echo providing a sense of calm and relaxation. The Arsenic
Water from The Arsenic Spring is believed to be beneficial for relief from
arthritis, stomach ulcers and to heal a variety of skin conditions. Water from
the iron and arsenic springs is blended in various pools throughout the property.
There are three secluded and private outdoor pools complete with kiva fireplaces.
The mud pool is open seasonally from May through October, weather permitting.
Here you can slather mud all over your body and bake in the sun until done. As

Eco-Friendly Practices: Ojo
Caliente Mineral Springs is commitment to the environment and water conservation.
A new geothermal system uses the energy from the hot mineral water after it has
flowed through the pools to heat and cool the buildings. This system requires
one-tenth the energy of conventional systems to operate. All of the domestic waste
water is treated through a unique microbiological process at the on-site water
treatment facility to ensure the highest possible purity before it is reintroduced
to the land. It is also Ojo Caliente's priority to utilize the most progressive
green building techniques and materials in all new construction and remodeling. Other
initiatives include: Light pollution reduction by utilizing "down
lighting" exterior light fixtures to optimize OCMS's phenomenal night
skies. Rain water harvesting from roofs of new buildings for irrigation
use. Utilize natural landscaping berms to capture storm water for plant
irrigation and minimize silt runoff during storm events. Use native
and drought tolerant landscape plantings to minimize irrigation water requirements.
State of the art activated sludge wastewater treatment plant recharging the local
aquifer with high quality treated water. Use Low Flow Plumbing Fixtures
to minimize domestic water usage Use energy saving light bulbs to reduce
net electrical usage. Utilize non-CFC's gas in heat pump compressors
to protect fragile ozone layer. Geothermal energy heating & cooling
using OCMS's natural and historic mineral water resource slated for over 95%
of all newly constructed buildings in the facility (estimated that for every dollar that
will be spent on electricity required to run the pumps and compressors of the
new system, seven dollars of propane usage will be saved at current propane
pricing). Solar energy for domestic hot water systems. Recycling
program facility wide. Salvage of used building products program.
Reduction in landfill waste program. Utilize energy efficient Perform
Wall Building System, the major component of Perform Wall is recycled beadboard.
Locally harvested and milled timbers/beams utilized from "forest fire"
salvaged trees. Environmental tobacco smoke controlled campus.
Use of low VOC paints and finishes that are environmentally sensitive.
Maximize natural day lighting in new designs. Maximize views of OCMS's
amazing natural beauty in new designs.
