Yelo in New York, New York
Julie Register visited this relaxation center in midtown Manhattan in August, 2007

Yelo in New York City
Yelo in New York City

Yelo is not a spa. Yelo doesn't offer massage, body scrubs, body wraps, facials or hydrotherapy. "Why include it in DiscoverSpas.com?" you might reasonably ask. Because it offers what many people seek at a spa - relaxation and rejuvenation. It offers rest - reflexology and napping - in a very spa-like atmosphere. In my opinion, Yelo is a brilliant concept, well executed and perfectly suited for hyperactive New York City.

I stopped by Yelo before the ISPA Media Event in August, 2007 for a 60-minute Treat Yourself reflexology treatment. I checked in a few minutes before my appointment. Yelo takes care of business first, so you can relax during and after treatment. No tips are accepted, so you don't have to worry about that either. As part of the check in process, I was given a form to provide a bit of information about myself including my music preference. There were about 8 choices including opera, piano and whales. I selected Zen. Yelo uses a computer-based wireless sound system with multiple channels of music. The treatment rooms can each have different music playing at the same time or they can all have the same.

YeloChair at Yelo in New York CityMy therapist, Kendall, escorted me to my YeloCabTM, one of Yelo's patented treatment cabins. I was invited to sit in the YeloChairTM in the center of the room. Kendall offered me a blanket, but I was comfortable without one. He adjusted the chair by reclining the back and elevating the legs. This positioned my legs above my heart to slow down my pulse. I settled in the comfortable chair and listened to the soft, peaceful music. I was already feeling relaxed.

Kendall massaged my feet then wrapped them snugly in a gauzy cloth. He unwrapped one and carefully worked on each part of the foot. He re-wrapped it then worked on the other. Soon he was returning the chair to its original position signaling the end of the session. I left feeling great!

According to Yelo, "Excessive stress disrupts the natural functioning of all the body systems, or homeostasis. By using finger pressure and massage techniques directed at reflex points on the feet, hands and ears, reflexology releases energy blocks that can cause pain, tension or even disabilities. Reflexology also helps the body fall into deep relaxation, calming down the nervous system and allowing for better circulation. This will put you in a better mood and increase your energy and productivity."

In addition to reflexology for feet, Yelo offers reflexology for hands and ears. You can select one or a combination of two. You can also get this treatment for 30 minutes (Express Yourself) and 90 minutes (Indulge Yourself). Yelo also offers their version of the power nap. YeloNapsTM are available in the five-minute increments from 20 minutes to 40 minutes.

The retail area is filled with products to enhance your Yelo experience - Sprayology, Skyn, Tea Forte, Smiley, Young Living, Jane and Essence of Vali.

Nicolas Ronco, Founder and CEO of Yelo, created this wellness center with corporate “warriors” in mind - those who work marathon hours with little rest and are under great stress. Power naps can help them stay healthy and renew their energy to be more productive. I think there are others who would benefit from taking a break at Yelo - anyone who walks in NY. Even though I wear comfortable shoes when I visit the city, I always go home with incredibly sore feet - especially after attending an expo. Visiting Yelo before catching the train sounds very appealing. If you're tempted to try Yelo, there is a countdown to the next available appointment in the window and on the web site.
