Weight
Watchers has 45 years of experience helping people lose weight with the
"Four Pillars" approach that promotes healthy habits, a supportive
environment, exercise, and making smarter food choices. Extensive scientific
research and analysis has shown each pillar is equally important in losing
weight and keeping it off for the long haul.
"The
"gold" that smart companies mine from being green includes higher revenues, lower
operational costs, and even lower lending rates from banks that see reduced risk
in companies with carefully constructed environmental management systems. They
also reap soft benefits, from a more innovative culture to enhanced "intangible"
value, credibility, and brand trust."

What I
learned at the 2007 ISPA Conference & Expo about Sustainability and Greening in
the Spa Industry
This
is the second in a series of four articles on the 2007 ISPA Conference & Expo
held in Kissimmee, Florida November 12-15, 2007.
This
year I had four excellent opportunities to learn what the spa industry can do
and is doing to protect the earth's environment. I had a conversation with
Clodagh on green initiatives. I heard two presentations - Greening Your Spa
by Implementing Sustainable Practices and From Green to Gold: How Sustainability
Can Translate into Spa Profits that shared stories of tangible, real-life
green initiatives taken by role-model spas. I also had the unique opportunity
to sit in on the Green Spa Network's executive committee meeting.
A
new directory of Eco-Friendly
Spas has been added to DiscoverSpas.com. These spas
are committed to incorporating sustainable earth policies and practices in the
running of their businesses. They are each at different stages of the journey
but all share a similar intention. Karen Ray, Spa Director at the Calistoga Ranch,
reminds us, "Slow and steady can accomplish great things." Michael Stusser, owner
of the Osmosis Day Spa and Sanctuary and founder of The Green Spa Network says,
"It's important to feel good about what you are doing and not feel bad about what
you are not yet doing. Intent is most important." Click on the link to each spa
to read about what these spas are doing to be eco-friendly. More spas will be
added as I become aware of their ecologically sound practices. May their accomplishments
inspire us all!
Some
of these books were recommended by the speakers on sustainability at the 2007
ISPA Conference. More books and links to other resources on sustainability can
be found by clicking HERE.

The
$35 billion cosmetics industry is so powerful that they've kept themselves unregulated
for decades. Not one cosmetic product has to be approved by the US Food and Drug
Administration before hitting the market. Incredible? Consider this:
The European Union has banned more than 1,100 chemicals from
cosmetics. The United States has banned just 10.
Only 11% of chemicals used
in cosmetics in the US have been assessed for health and safety - leaving a staggering
89% with unknown or undisclosed effects.
More than 70% of all personal care
products may contain phthalates, which are linked to birth defects and infertility.
Many baby soaps are contaminated with the cancer-causing chemical 1,4 dioxane.
It's
not just women who are affected by this chemists' brew. Shampoo, deodorant, face
lotion and other products used daily by men, women and children contain hazardous
chemicals that the industry claims are "within acceptable limits." But there's
nothing acceptable about daily multiple exposures to carcinogenic chemicals -
from products that are supposed to make us feel healthy and beautiful.
Not
Just a Pretty Face delves deeply into the dark side of the beauty industry,
and looks to hopeful solutions for a healthier future. This scathing investigation
peels away less-than-lovely layers to expose an industry in dire need of an extreme
makeover.
Spa Art
Gallery & Shop
Pool,
Pleasantdale Chateau, New Jersey signed
by Artist Linda Troeller
This
is the seventh month I am featuring the Spa Photography of artist Linda Troeller.
Linda is an award-winning photographer who has been featured in the New
York Times, Marie Claire Magazine, Healing Retreats and Lifestyles, GQ Magazine,
Forbes Magazine and a number of publications for spa professionals.
She is the creator of Spa
Journeys and Healing
Waters. Troeller's style captures the fluidity of water and the luminosity
of physical shapes in spa settings. I had the pleasure of spending time with Linda
at Toskana
Therme in Bad Sulza, Germany where many of her photographs adorn the walls.
A new giclee
print, signed by the artist, will be featured each month.
