Heaven
Spa in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania
Julie Register visited this day spa north
of Philadelphia in July 2006
Yvonne
suggested incorporating Reiki into the Swedish massage I was about
to receive at Heaven Spa in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania. She said Reiki
would facilitate deep healing. In all the years I have been going
to spas, I had never had Reiki. I'd had hot stone massages that included
"energy work" I assumed was Reiki, but never a Reiki treatment
by name. I was happy to try something I hadn't had before. Yvonne
started the massage by gently holding my head and softly telling me
to take deep breaths, to calm and center myself, to let the chatter
stop in my mind, to relax all the muscles in my body and send my breath
to any tight spots. I appreciated hearing that. It is actually the
same mental inventory I try to go through for every massage I get.
Having the therapist say it took the "work" out of it for
me and helped me relax quicker. After a terrific scalp and facial
massage, she moved to the rest of the body. Yvonne massaged an area
using Swedish techniques that worked the knots and tension out of
the muscles followed by Reiki where she gently laid her hands on the
area for a while. It was deeply relaxing and felt like time just paused
for a bit. According to Heaven Spa's brochure, "Reiki is a gentle
method of energy facilitation which promotes inner balance, healing,
and wholeness. This ancient Asian Art enhances your body's natural
ability to heal on a physical, emotional and spiritual level. Reiki
life force energy is transmitted through the practioner's hands to
you in alignment with your individual needs." It was a lovely
massage. |

After the massage, Yvonne handed me a glass of water
and suggested I drink plenty of water. She escorted me to the
Lounge to wait for my next treatment. The Lounge was filled with
comfortable chairs including a massaging chair, which I didn't
need at the moment - thanks to Yvonne. I refilled my glass, selected
a slice of cucumber to munch on from the refreshment tray, had
a seat and admired the room's starry ceiling.
Before long, Tatiana came to escort me to a facial
treatment room. She started the facial by examining my skin under
a bright light. The verdict was dry skin on my cheeks with slight
oiliness in the T zone. Through a combination of Skinceuticals
and Hylunia products, cleansing, steam, exfoliating, extractions,
masks and warm towels, the skin on my face was whipped into shape.
During the first mask, my hands and arms were massaged and my
hands put into hand warmers. The last mask was a vitamin C mask.
My shoulders, neck and scalp were massaged for the second time
that day - wonderful! My face was massaged and a serum containing
vitamins was dotted around my eyes and lips. I walked away with
soft, moist skin.

I
was escorted back to the Lounge. Shortly Irena appeared to escort
me to a nail treatment room to finish my spa experience with
a pedicure and manicure. We started with the pedicure. I climbed
onto the chair and put my feet into the whirlpool bath. Irena
really took care to get the cuticles and nails in shape with
emery board and buffing block. She worked on the calluses with
a microplane and sandpaper. She rubbed my feet and lower legs
with a salt scrub polish. Finally, the pretty pink nail polish
was applied - OPI's Skinny Dippin' in Lake Michigan (I love
the names of their polishes!). The manicure followed a similar
procedure - soak in a bowl of water, cuticle care, nail shaping,
hand massage and polish. As I write this 9 days after my visit,
Skinny Dippin' in Lake Michigan is still adorning my fingers
- twice the length of my usual manicure.

Heaven Spa is located on the Garden Level of the
Pavilion in Jenkintown. The combined salon and spa encompass 11,000
square feet. The spa alone is 3,500 square feet with 14 treatment
rooms, one of which is a wet room with hydrotherapy tub. There
are separate men's and women's changing rooms and a coed lounge
with a starry sky. I visited a few weeks after the Philadelphia
area had been hit hard by rain. Heaven Spa did not escape the
flood. Water damaged the floors and left the spa with some repairs
to do.
Tatiana Reinhard, owner of Heaven Spa, is proud of
the spa and its accomplishments. It has been received numerous awards
from Philadelphia Style Magazine - Best Spa in Philadelphia 2005
and 2006, Best Facials in Philadelphia 2005 and 2006, Best Massage
in Philadelphia 2005 and 2006, Best Manicure in Philadelpia 2005
and 2006 and Best Waxing in Philadelphia 2005 and 2006. Heaven Spa
was named Best of the Best and Best of the Burbs by the local Chamber
of Commerce and Best in Philly and Best of the Best in Trend Newspapers,
Pennsylvania. Heaven Spa is considering expanding its current location
and expanding to two other locations in the Philadelphia area -
one late 2006/early 2007, the other later.
