Spa Places in the News New Hampshire is Becoming Dotted with New, Cutting Edge Spas Offering Plenty of Opportunities to Relax After a Day of Mountain Hiking or Skiing Spas probably aren't the first thing one thinks of when contemplating a visit to New Hampshire, but the beautiful landscape for which the state is known is becoming dotted with new, cutting edge spas offering plenty of opportunities to relax after a day of mountain hiking or skiing. A day spa or an inn with a spa on the premises may be just the place for a short respite while traveling companions are off doing something else. New Hampshire's offering of spas combine full-service treatments, state-of-the-art facilities and fully certified staffs, with the added benefit of being surrounded by some of the most spectacular mountain and lake views anywhere. LAKES REGION
Brand new in the Lakes Region is The Spa at the Inn. The spa is part of The Common Man Inn, which opened fall 2002 in the vibrant college town of Plymouth. The Spa offers facials, a variety of body treatments, pedicures, manicures and mud packs. Its pool area features an indoor/outdoor pool (you swim from inside to outside) and the opportunity to be massaged by an outdoor hot water waterfall. A special spa room offers light therapy to combat stress and winter blues, and a re-mineralizing anti-stress bath is offered in a special tub room. Spa cuisine, such as citrus black bean soup or shrimp cocktail appetizers, is served. After a day at the spa, guests and visitors can try Foster's Steakhouse, the Inn's restaurant. The Inn occupies a renovated factory building and sports a north woods theme, including some guest rooms which have cleverly designed sitting porches, making them feel like a cabin in the woods.
Also in the Lakes Region, the Lakeview Bed & Breakfast in the town of Winnisquam is not only close to skiing in winter and boating in summer, it now sports a brand new spa facility featuring a sauna, six-person Jacuzzi, and massage services. The inn offers packages year-round.

MERRIMACK REGION
The city of Manchester offers many attractions for visitors, such as the Palace Theatre, the Currier Museum of Art, and the Millyard Museum that celebrate this city's heritage as one of the largest mill towns in the world. There's also a chance to spend a day relaxing at Not So Plain Jane's Day Spa, located near these attractions on Dow Street in downtown Manchester. A specialty treatment is the Pumpkin Facial in fall, designed to help skin recover from summer sun. Day packages include a spa lunch. Innovations Day Spa in nearby Merrimack offers hair and makeup salon services, as well as a full menu of spa treatments and lunches. Business groups can use the spa's conference room, then treat participants to some relaxation therapies after the meeting.

SEACOAST REGION
New Hampshire is showing off its recently reopened grand hotel, the Wentworth-by-the Sea in the tiny town of New Castle, just on the southern edge of Portsmouth. Closed for many years, the one-time playground of the wealthy and famous has come back to life as a 161-room full service resort hotel. Included in this resurrection is a state-of-the art spa facility.
The spa encompasses 10,000 square feet of the Wentworth's east wing, and includes a fitness center and indoor pool. Five treatment rooms, plus relaxation rooms for waiting between treatments, are part of the new facility. In addition to traditional European-style massage, India-influenced Ayurvedic treatments are also offered, focusing on internal cleansing thought to be helpful in preventing disease. Wentworth has a spa package just for men, plus special packages for wedding parties or mothers-to-be.
If you've been traipsing around to the many visitor attractions on New Hampshire's seacoast, you might need a quick trip inland to the Wingate Salon & Spa in Stratham. Formerly located on Newbury Street in Boston, the Wingate's specialty is Tea Time, with fresh baked scones and fruit preserves served along with your choice of body treatments. Try the Peppermint Seaweed Gel or the Kiwi & Almond Body Buff Aromatherapy. The Wingate also has a package especially for men.

DARTMOUTH-SUNAPEE REGION
The River Valley Club, an athletic club in Lebanon, near the Dartmouth College campus, just happens to have some of the best spa services around. And, you don't have to belong to the club to get in. The spa is open to the public for day spa services. Specialty treatments include Sugaring (a method of gentle hair removal) and the French Clay Wrap, which detoxifies and re-hydrates skin. MONADNOCK REGION
The Grand View Inn Artists and writers have flocked to the Monadnock Region of New Hampshire for the tranquil inspiration of its predominant feature, Mount Monadnock. Now visitors can find some relaxation at the foot of that mountain with the spa services and first class cuisine offered at The Grand View Inn in the town of Jaffrey. The inn offers one-, two-, or three-night spa packages, which may include a massage in a secluded outdoor setting with the whisper of the pines as background music. Accommodations in this 19th century country estate afford some of the best views of the mountain in the region. Day packages are also available. Dine at the Grand View Inn Churchill's Restaurant, where Executive Chef Steve Perkoski changes the menu weekly.

THE WHITE MOUNTAINS REGION
Last year, the White Mountains Region regained one of its lost grand hotels, the Mountain View Grand in Whitefield. The restoration not only returned the hotel to its 19th century elegance, it also included the addition of a full-service spa. The services of its Tower Spa are complemented by some of the most astonishing mountain views around. The spa offers more than 50 services, including a Chromotub, in treatment rooms with panoramic views of the White Mountains. This luxurious hotel has several excellent restaurants, including Juliet's Restaurant where each menu item has a healthful "Spa Cuisine" interpretation. The "Garden Room" is adults only, with views of the sunset and a cascading waterfall to add to the romance. Choose a 5-day spa package with three light meals a day, and a wide sampling of all of the spa services. Two-day packages include the Tower Spa and more, with dinner and breakfast both days. Or choose a la carte services whether or not you are staying at the inn.
