UMA SPA - New Chilean Adventure Spa Hotel Emphasizes Local Elements

SANTIAGO, Chile (Jan. 22, 2008) - The new Tierra Atacama Hotel & Spa just opened in San Pedro de Atacama, a desert oasis in the dramatic Chilean Altiplano. Tierra Atacama sits at the gateway to the Atacama Desert, one of the highest and driest places on earth with surreal sandscapes, salt valleys, lush river basins, and massive volcanoes. After enjoying a day of adventure in the dry desert heat, guests will find a highlight to be returning to the rejuvenating Uma Spa.

The Uma Spa

Uma is the Aymara word for water. Water is a source of life, of revitalization. The Uma Spa at Tierra Atacama is designed to induce a calm and relaxing feeling through sensual aromas, colors and textures. Local elements will be incorporated into the spa treatments including desert herbs, desert sand, salt from the lithium rich salt flats, volcanic stones and volcanic mud from high in the mountains. You are greeted with towels, robes and sandals when entering Uma Spa. Uma includes four treatment cabins and water therapy circuits that have been developed using the different waters of the spa (hot and cold pools, Finnish and Turkish saunas, Jacuzzi, steam rooms). The Uma Spa is open to all guests over 16 from 11am to 9pm with appointments.

Body Scrubs – exfoliation with desert salts or sand and a massage with hazelnut or shea butter cream
Body Wraps – a mud herbal detox wrap and bath or sea weed body wrap and bath
Baths & Hydrotherapy – hydrating bath with milk and roses, relaxing bath with milk and mint, relaxing bath with infusion of desert herbs, hydrating bath with lavender or rose oils, baths with exfoliating salts and oriental woods
Body Treatments – toning massage with slimming creams, lymphatic drainage massage with draining oils, treatment for tired legs

Tierra Atacama is an all-inclusive resort with rates starting at US$330 per person, per day which includes accommodations, three meals plus snacks and open bar, all excursions, and transfers from the Calama Airport (one hour from San Pedro).
Weather in San Pedro de Atacama permits pleasant travel conditions throughout the year, with summer (December – March) temperatures in the low 80s and Chilean winter (June – September) temperatures ranging from 65 – 75ºC, with cool evenings, often better weather for hard-core adventurers.
There are several flights daily from Santiago to Calama (2-hour flight). Air Canada, American Airlines, Delta and LanChile offer daily flights to Santiago from North American cities.
