Nova
Medical Receives Practice Greenhealth Environmental Excellence Award
ASHBURN,
Va. –- 5-27-08 -- Proving that a large medical group can “go green,”
Northern Virginia’s Nova Medical, which includes Nova Medical Group, Nova
Urgent Care and The Medical Spa at Nova,
has been awarded the Environmental Excellence Partner Recognition Award from Practice
Greenhealth for their environmental efforts.
The
award was presented at the 2008 Environmental Excellence Award ceremonies in Pittsburgh,
Pa., on May 20, held in conjunction with CleanMed 2008, the global conference
for environmental leaders in healthcare. The Environmental Excellence Awards honor
health systems, healthcare organizations and hospitals that have made a commitment
to healthcare and the environment; the Partner Recognition Award is given to companies
that have taken the first steps toward improving environmental performance.
“The Environmental Excellence awards are tangible proof
that eco-healthcare is good for the planet and good for patients and staff,”
said Bob Jarboe, Executive Director of Practice Greenhealth. “We believe
that good work deserves to be recognized every step of the way. Nova Medical has
been singled out for their efforts to protect patient health and preserve the
environment,” he added.
Nova Medical’s
“Green Team” implemented – and effectively met – a series
of goals over the last year, including the implementation of an educational awareness
program on red bag waste. Through an employee education-and-reward program, Nova
was able to reduce red bag waste by 33 percent, surpassing the set goal of 20
percent.
The “Green Team” purchased
reusable water bottles for all employees, who had previously been using over 200
Styrofoam cups a day, implemented a recycling program, reduced the amount of fuel
used to transport waste, and ensured the use of environmentally friendly cleaning
products.
In addition, Nova Medical,
which includes facilities in Ashburn, Sterling, Leesburg, and Warrenton, utilized
the employee intranet and email to communicate environmental awareness to employees.
By doing so, paper waste and staff driving between sites was reduced.

step in eco-healthcare, and hopefully we can influence our staff, patients and
our communities to be more environmentally responsible in their own lives,”
said Dr. Grace Keenan, founder and Medical Director of Nova Medical. “The
greening initiatives put into place at Nova Medical are proof that each company
and individual can make a difference, even in the little day-to-day changes.”
Dr. Keenan said Nova Medical will continue to implement environmental
initiatives through ongoing activities and future plans.
