Description: Joya Spa – an interpretation of the Spanish word for jewel – is the jewel of InterContinental Montelucia Resort & Spa in Paradise Valley, featuring the dramatic backdrop of Camelback Mountain and situated in the famed Sonoran Desert, a longtime destination for rejuvenation and recovery.

Treatments and Programs: To prepare for entry into the spa, guests are encouraged to rinse their hands with soothing waters from the reflection pool in the spa courtyard to “wash their worries away,” the first of seven Jewels of Discovery found in the Joya Spa experience. Jewel of Discovery numbers two and three are found in two domed rooms with pedestals; the first a pedestal with a Moroccan scrub stone designed to allow guests to make a wish, and the second a crystal ball pedestal lit by an overhead representation of the starlight in the night sky in Granada, Spain, where guests take deep, calming breaths and set their intention for the spa experience. Jewel of discovery number four is the wet area ritual -- a modern interpretation of a traditional Hammam experience, a 15-minute add-on therapy which includes a scrub with traditional Moroccan black soap and essential oils, designed to prepare the mind and body for spa treatments. The Hammam experience unfolds by guests entering a warm room where they rest before being escorted to a dimly-lit, tiled treatment room for a scrub. Next, guests are guided to a steam room before balancing the heat with a cold deluge. Then guests move on the whirlpool, where they relax as targeted lumbar points massage the lower back and a “wave” action soothes the body into a state of weightlessness. From the whirlpool guests move to the sauna, and finally, to the relaxation lounge to wait for their therapist. Jewel of Discovery five is the serene quiet lounge, six is the spa treatment itself and seven is maintaining an ongoing relationship with guests. The Joya Spa menu is fully customized. Each treatment, whether facial, body or massage, is customized to the guests’ needs, health and skin type. Spa Facilities: Conceived by famed spa designer Sylvia Sepielli, Joya Spa opened August 2008. Joya Spa is Moroccan-inspired in décor and spacious in design. The Alhambra Walkway leads to Montelucia's two-story, 31,000 square-foot landmark with 5,200 square feet of outdoor space Joya Spa channels the raw splendor of Moorish Andalucía Spain with whitewashed walls contrasting vibrant hues of ochre and multi-colored, custom-made Moroccan tiles. Inside the dramatic entry rotunda, you will find the Sap reception, a full-service salon, retail boutique, and the grand stariway, where light cascades through 30-foot-high windows, filling the rotunda with a warm glow.

Guests can enjoy a social encounter with other guests or members in the social lounge. A variety of beverages and light snacks are available in these areas. Signature teas including the signature Joyambrosia will be served in traditional samovars. With a comfortable atmosphere, the lighting is bright and encourages conversation. In this space men can enjoy watching sports on the high tech flat screen TV, while woman can have a quiet chat with friends or can sit back and relax with a good book or magazine while waiting for their therapist.

The quiet lounge is soothing, with soft textures and seating that include cozy day beds with oversized plush cushions. The relaxation lounge is a transitional space designed for the guests to unwind and prepare for their therapy. Spa talents provide soothing services for each guest in the quiet lounge. The guest is invited to relax on a comfortable day bed and enjoy soft background music while waiting for their therapist.

Joya Spa features 19 treatment rooms, of which five are couples suites offering private whirlpools and outdoor showers with breathtaking views of Camelback Mountain. Additionally, Joya houses the Palace Suite – an 850 square-foot private suite with a queen-size daybed, oversized bathtub, indoor whirlpool, fireplace, luxurious treatment tables and floor-to-ceiling doors opening up to the outdoor spa pool deck. Deep within, the Spa atmosphere is defined as luxurious, where the grandeur of warm rooms, steam rooms, saunas. Joya Spa also offers private Couples Suites with inviting balconies that showcase breathtaking views of Camelback Mountain as well as a rooftop pool that's reserved for spa guests featuring private outdoor Cabana and grand Cabana Suites.

The second-floor 37-piece (19 cardio, 18 strength) Technogym-equipped fitness center overlooks Camelback Mountain and the rural desert beauty of Paradise Valley, creating a stunning place to work up a sweat. Additionally, there are two free weight areas, a stretching station and group fitness in the motion studio, also overlooking Camelback Mountain. Sunrise yoga, sunset spinning, dance and other group fitness classes will also be offered in the studio as well as outside on the fitness center terrace. Inside the fitness area is a juice bar hosted by energetic talents with a wealth of fitness knowledge.

Outside the literal confines of the resort, which sits at the base of Camelback Mountain, guests are offered trail maps and mileage recommendations, as well as non-guided and guided hiking and rock-climbing opportunities. For the adrenaline-seeking guest, rappelling off of Camelback Mountain overlooking the resort and the exclusive enclave of Paradise Valley below is offered.

Joya Terrace, located by the spa pool deck and servicing spa guests, offers delectable, healthful, Moroccan-inspired food and beverage service. Showcasing the healing power of natural foods, the Joya Terrace serves spa and fitness guests with fresh, healthy, refreshing and invigorating foods and beverages to enjoy in the spa, salon, and outdoor seating area of the spa. The menu items are both unique and tasty and feature cuisines from Southern Spain and the Mediterranean in a beautiful setting with picturesque views of Camelback Mountain.
