Estrella gently touched my shoulders and said these words softly in my ear. Her touch instantly drained away the tension in my body. Her words, a Maya blessing, were reassuring. I took a deep breath. Incense, the ancient way to communicate with the gods, wafted through the air to cleanse the spirit. The primal sound of Prehispanic music - clay flutes, rain sticks, ocarinas, rasps, drums, rattles, whistles - played unobtrusively in the background. I was having a JW Mayan Copan Massage at the Spa at the JW Marriott Cancun Resort. A few feet away, Maru was preparing to give my husband a massage. Estrella placed a Tiger Eye Quartz, a sun symbol, on my navel to connect my energy to the universe in an elemental fusion and balance my energy with the earth's. She then proceeded to give me an excellent, very relaxing massage. Her touch was filled with kind intention. At the end of the massage, she said another blessing while she swept my body with a palm leaf to leave me clean and balanced. Estrella means "star" in Spanish. How appropriate! She gave me a 5-star treatment! Jeff was also very impressed with his massage, the first he had in Mexico. It was not surprising to learn that the spa was included in the 2005 Conde Nast Traveler's Top 50 Spas.

The couples treatment room is one of 17 treatment rooms in the 35,000 square-foot, three-story Mayan-inspired spa at the JW Marriott Cancun Resort. The spa was built so that many of the treatment rooms open to lovely views of the Caribbean.

The womens' locker room is filled with natural light from the hallway lined with windows. Even the showers have a fabulous view! The wet area has a sauna, eucalyptus steam room (with steam coming from a statue inspired by Mayan masks!), and plunge pools. The serene relaxation lounge offers fruit and a variety of teas - chamomile (manzanilla), peppermint (hierbabuena), ginger (jengibre) - and cucumber water.

Jeff and I made good use of this lovely spa during our visit to JW Marriott Cancun. Each morning we worked out in the fitness center then read the paper while enjoying a smoothie or protein shake at the juice bar. I learned a new phrase from the sign over the Fitness Center door, "Tenga un dia saludable!" (Have a healthful day!)

We enjoyed soaking in the large co-ed whirlpool as well as using the resistance feature in the indoor spa pool.

I also enjoyed the unique items offered in the spa's retail store. I came home with the spa's brand of shower gel, a geode aromatherapy diffuser and an ocarina that "cries" like a baby when filled with water.

When not enjoying the spa, we lounged by the pools or on the beach. The resort fronts 200 meters of fine, white sandy beaches. There are three free-form infinity pools with two whirlpools offering an sea view.

While we didn't spend a lot of time in it, our spacious, elegant suite was very comfortable.

One evening we had a romantic dinner at the JW Marriott's Gustino restaurant which serves fresh seafood and specialty Italian cuisine.

The JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa was a great place to celebrate our anniversary!
