We arrived at Wintergreen
Resort late in the evening. We couldn't see much while driving in the dark. We
knew we were going up hill but had no idea of how far we had climbed until the
next morning. We awoke to a breathtaking sunrise view from our condo of the Blue
Ridge Mountains and the valley at Stoney Creek from high atop a ridge. We were
above the clouds with the hawks at an elevation of close to 4,000 feet.
Wintergreen
Resort is located on 11,000 acres on the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
It's different than most resorts I've been to. It's completely owned and managed
by its members. There is no hotel or inn or central residential building. Instead,
the accommodations consist of rental condos, townhouses and single family homes
spread along the ridges. Our 2-bedroom condo was very comfortable with a full
kitchen, fireplace, large deck, whirlpool for two and more.

While there is no hotel, there are 45 holes of championship
golf; seasonal skiing, snowboarding and snowtubing; an award-winning tennis program;
40,000 square feet of meeting and event space; and a variety of enticing dining
options including The Copper Mine Restaurant and Lounge, Devils Grill Restaurant
and Lounge, Stoney Creek Bar & Grill and The Edge Restaurant.
There
are also the Aquatics & Fitness Center and Wintergarden Spa located on the
highest point of Wintergreen Resort. The Aquatics & Fitness Center features
a cardiovascular and strength studio, heated indoor and outdoor pools, hot tubs,
steam rooms, and saunas. Completed in January 2006, the $4-million expansion added
more than 6,000 square feet to the spa, which now offers additional treatment
rooms, state-of-the-art equipment and enhanced services. Spectacular views of
the Blue Ridge Mountains are showcased throughout the 12,000-square-foot facility
(including public areas, treatment rooms and fitness center).
The
Aquatics Fitness & Center offers 12-station strength and conditioning circuit
and free weights as well as cardiovascular equipment including treadmills, stationary
bicycles, stair-steppers and peak trainers. There is a group exercise studio and
group fitness classes and a fitness trainer.
The Aquatics Fitness & Center also offers an indoor pool, outdoor
pool, hot tubs, private steam room and sauna in locker rooms
Connected to the Aquatics & Fitness Center
is the Wintergarden Spa, built in 2005, which features men's and women's changing
rooms with showers and saunas, a co-ed relaxation lounge, 13 individual massage
and treatment rooms, two treatment rooms feature horizontal Vichy showers and
a salon.
After having breakfast at Copper Mine Restaurant,
Jeff and I went to the Wintergarden Spa for a little relaxation before heading
home. I was having a Signature Wintergarden Massage and Jeff was having his usual
Swedish Massage. Both were 80 minute treatments, and we looked forward to them.

The
approach to the spa is quite lovely with water falls and arched bridges. We checked
in, changed in our respective locker rooms and met in the co-ed lounge. There
were two comfortable lounge chairs overlooking the woods. We settled in.

Debbie,
my therapist, escorted me to my treatment room. The next 80 minutes were a combination
of Swedish massage, hot stones and lavender infused hot towels. It was a very
good and very relaxing massage. Back in the lounge, Jeff had high praise for his
Swedish massage. It was a great way to start the day!

procumbens), which is also commonly known as the teaberry or checkerberry. The
wintergreen is a plant that flowers in the summer with a white bell-shaped blossom
and produces a red berry in the winter. When pinched, the plant has a distinct
wintergreen fragrance. This plant, native to the easter United States, can be
found abundantly at Wintergreen Resort and is where the town of Wintergreen, Virginia
got its name.

Aquatics & Fitness Center Access - All guests
of the Wintergarden Spa have complimentary use of the Aquatics & Fitness Center
when they purchase a Spa treatment on the day of service. •
Reservations - As Spa services are always very popular
with guests, it is strongly recommended that you make your Spa appointments when
you make your lodging reservation. All appointments are guaranteed with a credit
card. Upon arrival, guests without reservations will be accommodated if appointment
times for selected treatments are available. Spa prices, services and hours of
operation are subject to change. •Check-In
-Check in with the Spa Concierge at least 20 minutes prior to your first scheduled
appointment. You are encouraged to shower and take advantage of the amenities
prior to your service. Appointments begin promptly at the time they are scheduled.
Should you arrive late, your appointment may be shortened to allow the technician
to be on time for his/her next appointment. •
Cancellation - If you must cancel, the spa will be
happy to assist you in rescheduling your appointments. However, if rescheduling
your appointment is not an option for you, a 24-hour cancellation notice is required
for a la carte services. For Spa packages, a 48-hour notice is required. Failure
to comply with this cancellation policy will result in a full charge of each service
or package. Group cancellations will be defined within a group contract. A $25
dollar change fee will be assessed for each treatment you wish to change on the
day of that service.

Spa Attire - You will need to bring your swimsuit
for the pool area and workout gear if you plan to use the fitness facilities.
Robes, slippers and towels will be provided to you upon your arrival at the Spa.
You will also be given a locker to store your personal belongings. Please do not
bring jewelry to the Spa, as the spa cannot guarantee the security of these or
other valuables.

Health Alerts - Please inform our staff of any health
concerns you may have at the time of booking your appointment. Some of our treatments
may not be appropriate or available if you are pregnant or have certain health
conditions. •
Gratuities - In appreciation to the staff for outstanding
services, gratuities may be given at your discretion. All gratuities are appreciated
and 100% of the gratuity goes to the service provider. An 18% gratuity is recommended
and may be added to your bill at the time of check out. •
Spa Etiquette - Help keep the Spa a sanctuary of
tranquility and relaxation. Please respect the quiet and privacy of other Spa
guests by refraining from using all electronic equipment while at the Spa. Please
speak softly or simply enjoy the silence. The Spa is a non-smoking facility. •
Age Limits - The Spa as well as the Fitness Center
is restricted to those 16 years or older. Salon services are available to guests
under the age of 16. •
Last Scheduled Service of the Day - If you are scheduled
for the last service of the day, we ask that you arrive early to enjoy the Spa's
amenities as the Spa does close after the last service is completed. •Service
Providers - When scheduling your treatments, you may request a male or female
therapist; however, the spa cannot guarantee this preference. All of the therapists
are highly skilled professionals and are well-trained in draping techniques to
provide you with the utmost comfort for your Spa experience. The ability to schedule
you with either allows the spa to provide you with the widest range of appointment
availability. All massage and bodywork services are provided by Virginia Licensed
and Nationally Certified Massage and Bodywork Therapists.
